One of the biggest issues that we face from plastic bags is their persistent ability to pollute the environment no matter what medium; whether it be air, water, or land, plastic bags find a way to contaminate nature in every possible way. But did you know? Apart from filling up landfills and being a health hazard for land animals, plastic bags affect the soil too.
Although we might not notice, plastic bags affect the soil in a much deadlier way than just filling up space. Plastic bags are rarely sent for recycling and hence are mostly incinerated in either landfills or sometimes in waste-to-energy plants. However, most of the plastic bags being used end up floating around somewhere on the ground. Since plastic is virtually non-biodegradable, one would think that the worst plastic bags can do is lie around in landfills and our streets for decades until they’re incinerated. The reality, unfortunately, is quite different.
Why is this a huge problem?
The problem with plastic bags just lying around is that they are very quick to photodegrade – a process where plastic breaks itself down into smaller plastics called microplastics and release toxic chemicals in the process. Photodegradation is one of the major ways how plastic bags pollute the oceans, and the problem is even worse for land, as experts claim microplastics polluting the land are several times higher in number than the ones in the ocean.
The land covers around 30 percent of the entire Earth, and with a fraction of that land being fertile, we have a bigger problem at our hands than we might expect. Fertile land is a non-renewable resource, as it deteriorates over time with use. Having microplastics infused in the fertile land make things even more complex since the chemicals released into the soil during photodegradation not only contaminates the crops, but also the water underground that may be used for drinking purposes.
That’s not the only problem, these chemicals may get washed up into streams, polluting the waterways as well. The food that is consumed from this contaminated soil also affects the health of humans and animals, leaving them prone to illnesses and causing potentially fatal complications to the stomach and intestines.
So, not only plastic bags affect the soil, but also the water, the beings that consume the water and food from the soil, as well as the marine life that lives in the contaminated waterways, effectively threatening the entire ecosystem. And since fertile land is a non-renewable resource, high amounts of contamination would make the soil infertile, thereby depleting a precious resource necessary for survival.
How do the plastic bags end up in the soil?
Most of the plastic bags around the world are used in urban areas, away from agricultural land, and although it is true that plastic bags do get used in rural areas and near agricultural land as well, the amount of plastic doesn’t justify the large scale devastation being caused to agricultural land. So, how do plastic bags end up on agricultural land if they aren’t even being used there?
The answer: Sewage.
Sewage is a widely popular additive in the farming industry. It’s extremely cheap and can be obtained from almost anywhere. Sewage is often used as fertilizer to add nutrients to the fields. However, what is often overlooked during the process are the ingredients that make up the sewage.
Sewage is an amalgamation of various forms of waste, and often times this waste also contains an abundant amount of photodegraded plastic bags. When dumped into the fields, several microplastic “beads” start contaminating the soil as soon as they are dumped. These microplastics continue to affect the soil by further photodegrading and releasing harmful chemicals into the soil and the atmosphere as well.
Soil isn’t the final destination…
Plastic bags affect the soil by contaminating it and potentially making it infertile, but as we just mentioned, it doesn’t end there. Phthalates are a group of dangerous compounds linked to organ failure and reproductive complications when consumed. Plastic bags, while photodegrading, release significant amounts of phthalates and BPA (another harmful chemical directly linked to heart diseases) into the soil.
These chemicals contaminate the crops, as well as wash away in the streams causing massive harm to the marine life. Humans and animals who consume the food contaminated by microplastics suffer from several digestive illnesses, and in extreme cases may even suffer from organ failure and death.
How to prevent plastic bags from polluting the soil

However, with proper action and responsibility, as well as increased monitoring of sewage being used in agriculture by the government, it is possible to prevent further destruction, so we may be able to leave a healthier future for our upcoming generations.
